POSTCROSSING ~ Card #8 ~ Arrives in Dagenham, England

Postcard #8

The postcard we sent to Dagenham, England arrived at its destination awhile back but we've been so busy, we didn't get around to posting about it.  It took 9 days to travel 6,648 kms (or 4,131 miles).  Like Alisdair, Anita is new to Postcrossing, having only been a member for about a month.  Unfortunately the reference number was smudged, on the card, and she had a bit of difficulty getting it registered.  Thanks to some help from the website adminstrators, the problem was eventually sorted out.




Alisdair's next address is a destination in Thailand (this is the second card he's been asked to send to that country.).

POSTCROSSING ~ Postcard #4 ~ Arrives in the Netherlands

The blue lighthouse postcard we sent to Gerda in the Netherlands took 17 days to arrive.  It covered 6,780 kms (or 4,213 miles) on its journey.  Gerda is a very active member of the "Postcrossing" community, having sent and received more than a thousand cards over a three year period!  The site states the distance her cards have now covered is more than 3.6 million kms.

With this postcard registered, as having been delivered, the "Postcrossing" website generated another address for Alisdair. This one is for a young man named Vlad who resides in Moscow, Russia!

We've had many interesting places to send postcards to already. I can see why people like Gerda could continue to enjoy sending and receiving them over a long period of time.

POSTCROSSING ~ Postcard #3 ~ Arrives in Hong Kong

A third postcard has arrived at its destination.  This one made the journey to Hong Kong in 16 days.  It was a trip of 10,737 kms or 6,672 miles, arriving on March 13th.

The Postcrossing member who received the card has been involved with the website for over a year and has sent and received more than 150 cards.

Alisdair has now generated another address and postcard #8 will soon be sent to a new member in Essex, England.

POSTCROSSING ~ Postcard #8 ~ Off to Jolly Old England!

Another card finally arrived at its destination, enabling Alisdair to send another out.  This one is off to Anita in Dagenham, Essex ENGLAND.  Of course Alisdair told her about his British heritage and his love of all things from the United Kingdom.  The postcard says it was printed by "The Postcard Factory" in Saskatchewan but quite honestly, I've never seen a field of sunflowers in this province.  Maybe I just haven't driven down the right road!  We've tried to grow a few in the garden and while they have grown tall, we've never had much success harvesting the seeds.

POSTCROSSING ~ Postcard #7 ~ Off to Port Orchard, Washington, USA

With the arrival of "Card #2" in Mississippi, Alisdair could generate another address to send a postcard to.  This time, he got another collector in the United States ~ a lady named Jeanne in Port Orchard, Washington.  It's only 1,179 kms (or 733 miles) away, so the "traveling" time shouldn't take too long for this card.  But I've been wrong before ... so we will not "count our chickens before they hatch!" We'll mail it this afternoon when we're out for Isobel's ballet lesson.

POSTCROSSING ~ Postcard #2 ~ Arrives in Mississippi, USA

It had the shortest distance to travel of the postcards we sent on February 25th (just 2,839 kms or 1,764 miles) but it took 15 days for it to arrive in Kitty's mailbox in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA. It was the second, of the five cards we initially mailed, to arrive at its destination. The official registration on the Postcrossing website took place on Saturday, March 12th. Kitty is a very active member of Postcrossing ~ with more than 500 cards both sent and recieved. 

Now that Alisdair's second "SENT" postcard has arrived at its destination, he can send another to someone else.  Postcard #7 is destined for a mailbox in Port Orchard, Washington, USA.

POSTCROSSING ~ Postcard #6 ~ Off to Munich, Germany

Here is postcard #6, which will soon be winging its way to a lady named Ines in Munich, Germany.  Alisdair told her about taking German lessons.  Unfortunately his tutor has been away in Spain and Germany for the last few weeks, so he is anxious to get back into his Tuesday lessons again.  Eva will be home in Saskatchewan in the next day or two, but she may need another week off from German class to recover from her jet lag!

POSTCROSSING ~ Postcard #1 ~ Received in Nonthaburi, Thailand

You may recall our recent discovery of the "Postcrossing" website.  Alisdair and I mailed off five postcards on Friday, February 25th to destinations in the USA, the Netherlands, China, Hong Kong and Thailand.  I was sure the card enroute to Mississippi would arrive first.  I was very wrong!

The first card to arrive in the recipient's mailbox was sent to a girl named Thippawan in Nonthaburi, Thailand.  She has been a member of the group for over two years. The "Postcrossing" site says the distance the card travelled was 12,120 kms or 7,531 miles.  The card was registered on March 8th.

With the registration process now complete, Alisdair's address will be automatically generated by the site and he will receive a card from someone else, somewhere in the world!  We can also send another postcard, now that this one has arrived.  The next address we were given to send a card to is in Munich, Germany!

COMPUTER FUN ~ Postcrossing ~ Cards From Around the World!

We happened upon an interesting website today called Postcrossing.  This is a site where you can register to send and receive postcards from all over the world!

At first, you can send up to five postcards at a time.  You put an identification code on the top left hand corner and mail them off to the addresses provided.  The site also lists the approximate distance between the sender and the recipient.  There is also an option to scan a picture of the card (or take a digital one) and then upload it to the site.  When the recipient receives the card, they log on and register the fact that the card has arrived in the mail.  Once this has been done, the site generates your address to someone else and the cycle continues.

We signed up as "Porter's Primary" and confirmed our email address.  The first address that was generated was in China.  The next one was from the Netherlands.  The third destination was Thailand.  The fourth was Hong Kong and the fifth and final card, for this time, was a lady in Mississippi!

Luckily we had some odd postcards lying around the house, so we quickly wrote them out and went to the post office and mailed them off on the start of their journey(s) around the world!  Unfortunately we were too late for the mail truck, so they will sit in the local post office till Monday afternoon.  It will be interesting to see how long they take to arrive at their various destinations.  I'm guessing that Mississippi will be the first to arrive at its destination but, of course, the postal service might surprise us!

In addition to the excitement of receiving mail, on a regular basis, Alisdair will be able to do some research on the places where the cards originate from.

Apparently there is also a sister website called "Bookcrossing" where people send books to one another.  That seems a little more expensive, and harder to do as people would have certain interests and many of the books might not "hit the mark," so I doubt if we will try that.

Anyway, we will post about the postcards that we eventually hope to receive!
