SKETCH TUESDAY ~ "Something Made with Fabric, Beads or Yarn"

Alisdair's Crazy Quilt
Alisdair glued squares of fabric, that he'd cut from a 5" Charm Square we received at the Manitou Creative Quilters show last weekend, to his "Sketch Tuesday" entry for this week. Who wouldn't want to snuggle up under a crazy quilt like this one?  Too bad it's only made of paper!  The slideshow is smaller than usual this week, which Harmony Art Mom attributed to Spring Break.

Next week's assignment is to sketch something you would see on a playground.  Join the fun!  Email a photo of your picture to sketchtuesday@yahoo.com before 9 p.m. PST on Monday, May 2nd and it will be included in the next slideshow.

SKETCH TUESDAY ~ "Something with a Tail"

The Easter Bunny
If you look very closely, you will see a little white tail on this fanciful rabbit ~ Alisdair's version of the Easter Bunny.

An anonymous commenter, on last week's "Sketch Tuesday" post, suggested Alisdair could draw a book as it would contain a TALE!  Although Alisdair didn't follow through on the pun, we were amused to see  another artist did just that!  Other somewhat unusual interpretations of the theme were some participants who drew kites with long tails and those who drew girls with ponytails!  You can view this week's slideshow here.

The next "Sketch Tuesday" assignment is to draw something that is made with fabric, beads or yarn. This one could inspire real creativity as artists could embellish their drawings with samples of these craft materials.  I look forward to see what Alisdair, and the rest of the artists who enter, come up with.

You can also enjoy participating in "Sketch Tuesday."  Just send an email to sketchtuesday@yahoo.com with a photo of your drawing attached.  Deadline for entries is 9 p.m. PST on Monday, April 25.  See you in the slideshow!

SKETCH TUESDAY ~ "Something Purple"

It's Tuesday again ... and time for the big "Sketch Tuesday" reveal of the week!  The assignment was to sketch something purple.  Since Alisdair didn't have a purple paint block, it was a bit of a challenge to mix the colours to create his picture.

"GRIMACE"
After experimenting with Isobel's purple tempera paint, he went back to mixing his watercolours and painted "Grimace," one of the licensed characters from McDonald's Restaurant.

Here is the slideshow with the rest of this week's sketches.  The next assignment, due by 9 p.m. PST on Monday, April 18th, is to sketch "Something with a Tail."  Entries can be e-mailed to sketchtuesday@yahoo.com

Have fun sketching!

SKETCH TUESDAY ~ Something You Put in a Fruit Salad

Spotty bananas, an apple, grapes and cherries
It's "Sketch Tuesday" again!  This week's assignment was to draw something that you would put in a fruit salad.  Alisdair tried to paint a cluster of fruit from a watercolour book that we'd borrowed from the library.  He was having difficulties and the paint was all running together and the deadline was looming for submission.  So, he resorted to pencil again this week.  I'm sure next week will be a drawing embelished with either markers or paint as participants are asked to "Sketch something purple!"  Alisdair jokingly said he would do a portrait of his Scottish Granny as purple is her favourite colour and she frequently wears items of clothing or accessories in that shade.

You can watch the slideshow here.  Try not to get too hungry looking at all the delicious fruit!

If you wish to participate in "Sketch Tuesday," simply e-mail a photo of your picture to sketchtuesday@yahoo.com before 9 p.m. on Monday, April 11th.  Once you send the first contribution, you'll be hooked, just like Alisdair was!  Happy sketching ...

SKETCH TUESDAY ~ "Something With Claws!"

Santa Claus???
I knew Alisdair had a sense of humour, but this character trait is very evident in his contribution for this week's "Sketch Tuesday" assignment!

Participants were asked to "draw something with claws."  As you can see from the slideshow most of the children drew bears, lions, cats, dogs and birds.  But Alisdair had to be funny and play on the "pun" in the words "Claus" and "claws," and so he drew the Jolly Old Elf, himself.  What does it matter that it is March?  St. Nicholas is obviously a "man for all seasons!"

Next Tuesday's assignment is to draw "something that it is an ingredient in a fruit salad."  Join the fun, if you want, and send your sketch to "Harmony Art Mom," at sketchtuesday@yahoo.com, before 9 p.m. PST Monday, April 4th.  All contributions are welcomed!

SKETCH TUESDAY ~ "Sparkle, Sparkle Jewellery"

Colourful ring
It's "Sketch Tuesday!"  You may recall this week's assignment was to draw some jewellery.  Alisdair went to the Skye Silver website and looked at some of the Celtic rings.  He drew one, as best he could, with a pencil and then took his watercolour paints and embellished the design with precious stones.  The result is an attractive piece of jewellery ~ almost like a family ring.  You can view the rest of the participants contributions at "Sparkle, Sparkle Jewellery."

Skye Silver is located at Colbost (near Dunvegan) on the Isle of Skye.  We have visited their showroom and workshop in "The Old Schoolhouse."  In fact, Alisdair has a small silver shell created by these craftsmen.  It's an interesting place and well worth a visit.  Their slogan is "home of the original jewellery from Skye."

Next week's challenge?  Participants are asked to "draw something with claws" but are reminded that "Harmony Art Mom" doesn't allow entries with violence or gore.  Maybe Alisdair can draw another ring ~ after all, my diamond has four claws!  Obviously "Harmony Art Mom" is a woman who enjoys a good pun!  You can enter by emailing a likeness of your sketch to sketchtuesday@yahoo.com before 9 p.m. PST on Monday, March 28th.

SKETCH TUESDAY ~ Something You Would See at the Circus . . .

Snacks at the Circus
Last week's "Sketch Tuesday" assignment was to draw something you might see at the circus.  Alisdair has never been to a circus, so he found it hard to decide what to sketch.  He had only begun drawing when I took Isobel to her ballet lesson and so I had no idea what he had actually come up with.  I was pleasantly surprised to see his popcorn and drink picture when I returned home.

You can view the entire Three Ring Circus Slideshow here.

Next week's assignment may be difficult for Alisdair, too.  Participants are asked to draw an item of jewelery.  You can draw a person wearing the bling, if it is easier to depict it that way.  Maybe Alisdair can sketch Kate Middleton's engagement ring handed down from Princess Diana ~ or the 'Heart of the Ocean' necklace that was featured in the Titanic movie!  While we may not be rich enough to actually buy fancy diamonds and gold, we CAN draw them.  See you next week ... when "Sketch Tuesday" gives Tiffany & Company some stiff competition ... with a glittering slideshow!

SKETCH TUESDAY ~ Something Beginning With The Letter "H"

Alisdair came up with unique art project beginning with the letter "H" for "Sketch Tuesday" ...

The HOME HARDWARE logo!
Alisdair's interpretation of the logo.
I guess he thought the slogan "Home Owners helping homeowners" had lots of "H's" in it!  There were lots of horses, hummingbirds, hearts, heads, hair, helmets ~ even a drawing of the Harmony Art Mom ~ as well as  many other imaginative things ~ in the Sketch Tuesday slideshow this week, but, Alisdair was right.  His drawing was the only "Home Hardware" logo!

Watch the entire show HERE.

Next week's project ~ sketch something associated with a "Three Ring Circus."  Imagine yourself as the Ringmaster and then draw your exploits "Under the Big Top!"

SKETCH TUESDAY ~ Birdfeeders (With or Without Birds!) ~ In Watercolour

"Sketch Tuesday" ~ Watercolour painting
We knew Alisdair would probably be at his grandparent's house at the beginning of this week, and so we had to submit our contribution for "Sketch Tuesday" earlier than our usual Monday night just before the deadline rush!

The last time I went grocery shopping in Lloydminster, Alisdair came with me.  We stopped at Staples Business Depot to do some photocopying and he found a set of Reeves watercolour paints on a table.  The tag said $4.95.  It seemed like a good deal, so we picked them up.  Later, at the register, we discovered everything on that particular display was actually half price, so the paints were only $2.50!  I guess we should have gone back to get another set, but we didn't.

Since Alisdair was anxious to try out his new paint set, he broke out the watercolours for "Sketch Tuesday."  He made one painting with a blue birdfeeder.

First Painting ~ Enroute to Scotland!
Then he decided he should do another painting (since the first was so much fun).  Once he was done, the difficult part began.  We liked both paintings but you can only submit one piece of artwork per person to the slideshow.  Finally it was decided that the blue birdfeeder painting would be sent to his Scottish grandparents and the other picture would be in the show.

When I emailed the picture to Barb McCoy, I added a few lines to thank her for implementing "Sketch Tuesday," and indicating that it has been a blessing to our family.  I KNOW we wouldn't be doing this kind of artwork, if we didn't have the encouragement from Barb to do a specific project each week.

She replied:  "I am so glad to hear that Sketch Tuesday is such an encouragement to your family, it keeps me motivated to know that there are children that are enjoying their sketching (and painting) as part of their education. Please let your son know that I enjoyed seeing his lovely birdfeeder and birds. I love to watercolor and it is fun to see someone else enjoying it too."

Next week's topic ~ Draw something that begins with the letter "H."  It will be interesting to see the variety of entries that participants will come up with on that open-ended assignment.  Isobel and I have already been talking about things that begin with "H" ~ maybe she'll send a contribution next time, too!

ARTWORK ~ "What Makes Me Smile" ~ CBEEBIES

"A steaming bowl of clam chowder and a glass of orange juice makes me smile!"

Since Alisdair is half-Scottish, he likes to keep up on his British information by checking out the various BBC websites.

In his search, he recently found an assignment to draw a picture of "What Makes You Smile."  Children are asked to send these to CBeebies in London, England.

The information is as follows:

Who or what makes your child smile?

Is it one of their friends? Maybe it's their brother or sister? Is it their favourite pet? Or does one of our CBeebies friends make them smile?
We would love your child to make a drawing or a painting of whatever it is that makes them smile. Or it could be a picture - the funnier the better.
Send them to us at:

Make Me Smile
CBeebies
PO Box 1234
London
W12 6WX

We'll try to show as many as we can so remember to put your child's name and age on the back.

If you are in the United Kingdom, (or have a UK proxy server), clicking the link below will allow you to watch a short video clip.  Watch video here.

We'll never know if Alisdair's drawing is featured on British television ~ but it's kind of fun to think that it might be.  The envelope is stamped and ready to be popped into the post this afternoon.  Wish him luck!

SKETCH TUESDAY ~ Sketch Something Related to "Disney"

"Mouse Ears"
Alisdair and I were in Home Depot on Friday evening and found these little "Mickey Mouse" shaped paint swatches for BEHR brand colours.  Since we knew the Sketch Tuesday topic for this week was anything Disney related, we decided to take a few home to see what we could create with them.  He eventually decided that he couldn't just do a collage as it was supposed to be "SKETCH" Tuesday - so we used some swatches to make a photo frame.

Click here to see the Sketch Tuesday slideshow.  Next week's assignment ~ draw a bird feeder (with or without birds!)

SKETCH TUESDAY - What is Growing "Down on the Farm"?

Here is Alisdair's entry for this week's "Sketch Tuesday" slide show on the theme "Down on the Farm."  For this contribution, he drew and coloured several smaller elements instead of making one larger picture.

Alisdair's Artwork
Alisdair's artwork is near the end of the presentation.  Click here to view the entire Down on the Farm Slide Show !  It's very colourful with a wide variety of entries.

Next week's task?  Draw something related to the "Wonderful World of Disney."  Why not send in your own "Sketch Tuesday" entry? We'd love to see your contribution!  Just email it to sketchtuesday@yahoo.com before 9 p.m. Pacific Time on Monday, February 21st.  Be sure to put Disney in the subject line and write a short message in the text portion, so your efforts won't be lost in the spam filter.

SKETCH TUESDAY - Something on a Boat or Ship

Today's sketching opportunity was to draw something that might be found on a boat or a ship.  Alisdair drew a ship's rudder (though he called it a steering wheel).  His drawing is the last one in the slideshow.

Colourful contribution
Next week's assignment is to draw something that you might find "growing down on the farm!"  The possibilities are almost endless on that one.  Pick up a pencil and draw an animal, some fruit or vegetables, or even a crop!  It's always fun to view the show on Tuesday mornings.... join us, and Harmony Art Mom,  for "SKETCH TUESDAY!"

SKETCH TUESDAY ~ Something Studied in Science

Tuesday seems to roll around pretty quickly.  Suddenly you realize that it is Monday evening and a sketch hasn't been emailed in yet!  So Alisdair got to work quickly and drew this illustration for "Chemistry."  The assignment was to draw something that a person would study in Science class.  Next week's task is to draw something you would find on a ship or a boat.  Feel free to enter!

Here is a link to the Science slideshow:

SKETCH TUESDAY - Draw Something Ugly!

Alisdair finished his contribution to this week's Sketch Tuesday Slideshow just minutes before the deadline.  The assignment was to draw something that was ugly.

Alisdair drew a picture of an animal and wrote the slogan "Killing for fun is an ugly sight.  Don't do it."  In another speech bubble it says "We should eat the meat" and another bubble says "No!  Let's just see the inside!"

Sketch Tuesday - "Killing for fun is an ugly sight!"
If you click in the above link, you can watch the whole show.  Next week's topic - Sketch something that you would study in Science.  Anyone can contribute, so get out your pens and paper and see what you can create for the next slideshow.

ART - Sketch Tuesday - 'T' is for Teddy Bear

"T is for Teddy Bear" - First Sketch Tuesday entry

I'm not quite sure how I first came across "Harmony Art Mom's" blog.  She has instituted something called "Sketch Tuesday" and gets others involved in her project.

It is easier to copy and paste Barb's explanation of "Sketch Tuesday" than to come up with my own description of this weekly event.  She explains:

What is Sketch Tuesday?

SketchTuesdayButton2

Every Tuesday I post a new sketch assignment on the Harmony Art Mom blog. Everyone is welcome to sketch and you do not need to sign up to participate. You can participate every week or as often as you wish since there is no commitment. I try to make the assignments open-ended so your child can interpret the assignment in a way that works for them. Every sketch is included in the slideshow so please send them in to share with other families.Parents are welcome to sketch and submit to the slideshow too.

How Do I Participate?

  • 1. Read the assignment in the Tuesday blog entry.
  • 2. Complete the assignment. Adults are welcome to sketch as well so feel free to sketch alongside your children.
  • 3. You may add a child's name and age to the sketch if you wish. I prefer that no other information be written on the sketches.
  • 4. Scan or photograph your sketch. Flickr has a size limit of 500 MB per image.
  • 5. Send in the image in JPEG format to: sketchtuesday@yahoo.com. Make sure to pay attention to the deadline which is Monday evening. I try my best to include late assignments but I cannot promise to always do so if you are too late. Please limit it to one sketch per person. If you can send in your sketch over the weekend, it would help me out greatly.
  • 6. Come back the next Tuesday and see the slideshow! If you access the slideshow before you see the blog entry up on Tuesday mornings, it is more than likely not complete.
The only other requirement is to have fun sketching!

Note added 7/3/10: I am receiving an increasing amount of sketches that go to my SPAM box. Some of you are sending an email with blank subject lines and not typing anything in the body of the email and I think my email system recognizes it as SPAM. When you send in your sketches, could you please put Sketch Tuesday in the subject line and then in the body of the email please type something even if it just says that it is for Sketch Tuesday or the number of sketches attached? It might make a difference. Thanks for your extra effort.

Here are all the past Sketch Tuesday blog entries:
Sketch Tuesday Assignments

This past week, the assignment was to Sketch something beginning with the Letter 'T.' At first Alisdair was going to draw a Tram.  But then he decided a teddy bear was more appropriate for him to draw as he loves his Braw Wee Bears from Scotland!  And so we submitted the sketch at the top of this blog post.  Perhaps seeing his artwork on the Sketch Tuesday slideshow will be the encouragement Alisdair needs to try drawing on a more regular basis.

The Sketch Tuesday slideshow for this week is ready to view.  Click on the title Terrific T and you'll be rewarded with Alisdair's teddy bear ~ as well as colourful tigers, trees, toast, turtles, a trophy, and a host of other things that begin with the letter "T."  You'll also find next week's assignment - to sketch something you can make with water.

Get out your pencil and paper and get sketching!  When you're finished, check out the Harmony Art Mom blog for inspiration and advice from a seasoned Homeschooling Mom!
