CONTESTS ~ Lloydminster Co-op Kids Club Colouring Competition ~ Part II

Alisdair's Entry

Isobel entered the Lloydminster Co-op "Kids' Club" Colouring Contest a few days ago.  I posted a picture of her artwork, at that time.  Here is Alisdair's entry for the same competition, where you could win 1 of 3 "Awesome Prize Packages!"

Even if they don't win a big prize, whenever we shop at the Co-op, (and show their cards to the bakery employees), Alisdair and Isobel can get a FREE cookie.  Now that's worth colouring for!  (And, according to Alisdair's Occupational Therapist, colouring is also very good for the childrens' fine motor skills.)  A win/win situation all round!

CONTESTS ~ Lloydminster Co-op Kids Club Colouring Competition

Tuesday, when Alisdair was away, (and Isobel was off school), I picked up the latest issue of The Lloydminster Source newspaper.  Inside was a large advertisement/colouring competition for the Lloydminster Co-op.  Apparently they have a "Kids Club" where children get a membership card that they can show at the grocery store bakery and get a free cookie whenever they are shopping.  There are also special activities planned for members and online computer games for their exclusive use.

When I showed Isobel the picture, she said, "Another colouring contest?  Well, it is worth a try!"  I thought that was so funny, as it was only about a month ago she had entered another competition, in the hope of winning tickets to a theatre performance ~ and was disappointed when it didn't happen.

This time, in addition to joining the Club, Isobel can also win "one of three awesome prize packages" ~ they aren't any more specific than that, so much of the contest remains a mystery!

Out came the Crayola crayons.  It didn't take long before the picture was ready to pop in the mail.  The deadline is March 18th, so we'll be waiting for a while before we can determine if Isobel's luck has improved with this contest!

CONTESTS ~ Part II ~ Toopy and Binoo Colouring Competition

Alisdair's Entry

After seeing Isobel's entry for the Meridian Booster's "Toopy and Binoo Marshmallow Moon Colouring Contest", Alisdair decided he would like to enter too.  Since we had to go to Lloydminster on business on Wednesday afternoon, we dropped his picture off at the Booster office.  Today is the final day for entries.  Apparently there is only one prize with 4 tickets to the show, a DVD and a puzzle up for grabs.  Fingers crossed!

CONTESTS ~ Toopy and Binoo Colouring Competition

Isobel's Entry

Toopy and Binoo are coming to Lloydminster in mid-February.  They will be performing at the Vic Juba Theatre.  Isobel likes to watch this cartoon on TV and so she entered a contest in the Meridian Booster newspaper to try to win 4 free tickets to see the show, a puzzle and a DVD.  We popped the picture in the mail on Friday and the entry deadline is later this week, so we'll have to wait and see if she is a lucky winner!  

CONTESTS - Alisdair "Comes Up Trumps!" ~ My Favourite Book Contest

It all started so long ago that we were a bit perplexed yesterday when a small package was crammed into our mailbox addressed to Alisdair.  The return address stamp said it was from the Saskatchewan Library Association in Regina - and I was quite sure it was not a reward for having overdue books!

Upon opening, Alisdair discovered he was one of many lucky winners in a contest CBC Radio sponsored back in October to celebrate "Library Week."  (See blog post "CBC Celebrates Library Week - October 15/2010)  His entry had singled out his Granny Jeannie's book on education as his favourite.

His prize?  What else?  A book!

The enclosed letter said:

Congratulations!  Your entry for the My Favourite Book Contest has been selected as one of the winning entries!

This year, The Afternoon Edition at CBC Radio One received nearly 1,000 entries from all over the province.  Thanks to various Canadian publishers and the help of SaskEnergy, we are able to select more winners than just those read on-air and we are pleased to present you with this book as a prize.  Keep on reading, and we look forward to your entry in next year's contest.

They didn't want to be on the boat in the first place. They were sent there as a character-building experience. But now the adults are gone, the quest for survival has begun.

There are two other books in the trilogy - Island II: Survival and Island III: Escape and apparently both are available through the local library.  Our local librarian (who encouraged us to enter the Favourite Book Contest in the first place) was delighted to hear of the win and informed us that a local girl was also a book prize winner.

Once we finish the E. Nesbit trilogy, we can begin reading the prize winning book, Island: Shipwreck.  Until then, we'll just have to imagine the adventures that lie between its pages!

ARTWORK - Isobel's Remembrance Day Legion Poster Contest Entry

After the Remembrance Day service at the Neilburg Community Hall, Isobel grabbed my hand and told me  she had a picture on display on the tables that lined the edge of the room.  I admit, I was a bit skeptical as I knew the prize categories only began with Grades 1 to 3.  Could she REALLY have a picture there?  Or was this wishful thinking?

"Show me your picture," I said.  I didn't have to ask twice!  "Okay," Isobel replied excitedly, steering me to the far corner.  "It's that one," she said, pointing to one with lots of colour on it.  Nearby were other pictures that looked more like pencil scribbles than actual drawings.  I picked up the drawing with the green grass and checked the backside.  Sure enough... Isobel's full name and class details were recorded on it!

Lest We Forget

Later, when we got home, I asked Isobel to explain what her picture was all about.  This is what she told me:  "This picture is all about the world and community. Every day is a great day in this picture.  The grass is green and the crosses are out to show we love the soldiers, and to mark where some other soldiers are, and where they died.  There is a tree and a big sun. There are clouds and a bird in the sky."

It pleases me to think my 5-year old is beginning to understand what Remembrance Day is all about.  Lest we forget....


 

Pumpkin Fun!

While watching cartoons on YTV (Youth Television) Alisdair came across some interactive TV.  The host, Carlos, got trapped by a bad guy whose weakness was pumpkins.  Viewers were asked to email the show with pumpkin pictures.  Here is the one we sent.  We hope it helped Carlos to be rescued!

NetSmartz Halloween Costume Contest

Alisdair recently found the CLUB UYN website at NetSmartzKids.org  This is a program provided by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and offers tips on keeping "safe" -- whether online or in day-to-day life.

The site had a Halloween Costume Contest that children could participate in.  They provided cartoon characters (Clicky, Nettie and Webster) and several accessories for them to wear.  The children could then choose a character and a costume to print out, colour and assemble.  They were then asked to either mail the picture to Alexandria, Virginia or to take a photo of their creation and email it.

Alisdair decided to use Clicky for his contest entry.  This is what he came up with, in the end.  We tried to email the picture but encountered some technical difficulties so we mailed his entry from Battleford on Saturday afternoon.  Colouring activities, such as this one, are good for Alisdair's fine motor skills.

Contest - CBC Celebrates Library Week

Saskatchewan Library Week will be celebrated from October 18th through 25th. As part of the official activities, the Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) is presenting a contest called "My Favourite Book." They have asked people to send in the following information to The Afternoon Edition, a CBC Radio program broadcast from Regina:

1. The title and author of your favourite book.
2. Why you like it and how it makes you feel.
3. Your full name and address.
4. Your age group (both children are in the youth category as that spans ages 5 to 12).

The winning entries will receive a book prize (what else?!) The winning entries will also be read on The Afternoon Edition, between 4 and 6 p.m. throughout the week.

When we were at the library on Tuesday (the 12th) the Librarian brought the contest to our attention. We had to act quickly as the deadline was the following day. Thanks to the option of emailing entries to the contest, both children made a submission and now have their fingers crossed that they may be in the running for a prize.

Of course Isobel's favourite book was "Whoosh, Went the Wish" (reviewed on this blog earlier). Her 50 word description said:

"It makes me laugh and feel happy. Henry wishes for "nothing but a cat" but some words get stuck in a bush. The fairy grants his wish and takes his house and clothes away. Henry is left with two pieces of newspaper! The fairy fixes it, giving him a cat."



Alisdair had considerable difficulty trying to determine what his favourite book was. Finally he decided to enter this title (which I don't think he has actually read!):



Family Learning: Engaging with Parents (Policy and Practice in Education) by Jeannie Mackenzie (who is one of his paternal grandmothers!)

Alisdair wrote: "This is my favourite book because my Granny from Scotland wrote it and it tells stories about my Dad.  It is eighty pages long but worth all eighty. I feel happy that my Granny is an author. Best of all, my copy is autographed by the author herself!"

Now that both entries have been sent to the CBC, we wait, with fingers crossed, to discover the possibilities. Good luck to both of the contestants from Porter's Primary!
